The winner of the 2007 Brisbane 48 Hour Film Project Best Overall Film has been accepted into the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival, to screen in the Short Film Corner on Tuesday May 20th 2008.
The film, entitled ‘Myles West’, was made for the 2007 competition and took out a swag of awards including Best Overall Film, Best Male Actor (Tim Dashwood) and Best Editing (Courtney O’Brien-Brown), as well as Best Original Script and Best Director for writer/director Bryn Chainey. Chainey was invited to attend the World Best of 48 Hour Film Project Competition in the US earlier this year as a part of the Cinequest Film Festival, San Jose, California. While not taking a major award, the film was selected to feature on the Top-15 DVD and received a Best Editing nomination.
Chainey recently announced that ‘Myles West’ is now set to take the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival by storm.
This achievement tops the list of follow-on successes from Brisbane 48 Hour Film Project competition winners, with 2006 / 2007 Best Overall Film Runner-up director Daley Pearson producing and directing an independent feature film, ‘$quid’ in Brisbane in 2007, and the 2006 Best Overall Film winner Michael Craft about to begin his feature film directorial debut ‘Storage’.
The 48 Hour Film Project, an international time-based filmmaking competition, has been running since 2001 in Washington DC, USA, and is now held in over 50 cities all around the world. The Brisbane competition has been running since 2004 and is the only Australian leg of the competition, offering filmmakers a chance to connect to an amazing international network.
Films must be made within 48 hours, must feature the competition’s Special Ingredients (a prop, character and line of dialogue) and must fit to a specific genre (horror, sci-fi, romance etc). All of these elements are announced right before the official competition launch, making the competition an even playing field for all filmmakers. All films made for the competition are then judged and screened before sell-out audiences. Prizes include sponsored awards in technical categories, and for the Best Overall Film winners, the chance to compete in the international finals in the US – an opportunity that has successfully proven to open doors for emerging filmmakers in the Brisbane community.
The Brisbane competition is held in October and filmmakers can find out more at: www.48hourfilm.com
